Sample Codicil 

When it’s time to update your will, you don’t have to start from scratch.

You can use a codicil, an addition or supplement that explains or modifies your existing will.

I give, devise, and bequeath $ ___________ to the Board of Regents of The University of Texas System (“Board of Regents”) for the use and benefit of The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center. Such funds shall never become a part of the Permanent University Fund, the Available University Fund, or the General Fund of the State of Texas and shall never be subject to appropriation by the Legislature of the State of Texas. If in the opinion of the Board of Regents, future circumstances change so that the purposes for which this gift is intended become illegal, impracticable, or no longer able to be carried out to meet the needs of The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, said Board of Regents may designate an alternative use to further the objective of The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, in the spirit of the original purpose.

In all other respects I ratify and confirm all of the provision of my said last Will and Testament dated on the _________ day of ______________, 20__.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I sign, publish and declare this instrument to be a Codicil to my last Will and Testament in the presence of the persons witnessing said Codicil at my request this _____ day of ___________, 20__.

To be valid, the codicil must be signed in the presence of witnesses, and the original should be placed with your other valuable papers. A copy can go to your lawyer and a copy to MD Anderson.
